BarreraNew Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico

Cecilio Barrera, Ph.D., was born in a town called Rio Grande City, Texas.  Originally he did not consider going to graduate school. However, one of his microbiology professors at the University of Texas, Austin, encouraged him to pursue more education.   In graduate school, he studied the relationship between a particular type of fungus and grasses. For many years he had a career as a research scientist, and during that time he worked in the lab, published papers and taught classes. He is currently associate dean of the graduate school at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Adapted from SACNAS, 2011.
