The lab I am currently working for does not have a CO2 incubator. They place everything in a regular incubator at 36 C. Before going to the owner of the lab and asking that a CO2 incubator be purchased I would like to know how important is it that we have one and if not having one will affect us when it comes down to inspection. I truely believe we need one but I need facts to make an informed decision. Thank you.

I`m a member of ASM but practice my profession as amicro supervisor in New Zealand, We recently got a project that will be marketed in US so we need to validate our equipments to cpmly with FDA regulations, my question is , Is there A FDA guidelines or standard that will cover the validation of a small steam steriliser or autoclave used in pharmaceutical industry, European standard has the EN 285 published by European Committe for Standardisation, is there an equivalent of this standard in the United States? If there is none, can we use the european standard to validate our autoclave and pass the report to US FDA to comply? Thank you very much, from all the way from New Zealand

Hi, I am currently a senior biology major who will be obtaining my B.S. in Biology in May 2005. I am interested in clinical microbiology and I was just wondering what would be the best path to take as far as education is concerned. Would it be more beneficial for me to obtain a Masters or a Ph.D in microbiology and then do a training program or should I just do a training program right after graduation? Also, do you have any suggestions to any good training programs/graduate schools that offer these programs? Thank you for your help in advance. Ms. Henry

Do you know of any references to update organism name changes. We frequently get proficiency critiques back with name changes that we were not aware of.

We forward all mycobacteriology specimens to the State Lab for testing. The State Lab will soon be charging $15 per specimen (directly billing the hospital lab), regardless of whether the specimen gets smear and culture only, or if it gets everything, including MTD testing, accuprobe, and 12 drug susceptibilities. Are we, the hospital lab, entitled to bill 3rd party payors for tests that we have paid the State Lab to run? If so, how much can we charge for these tests?

Is it correct that the pertussis vaccine is not given to adults even if a patient requests it? I personally would like to have the acellular pertussis included with my next diphtheria/tetanus booster because of the high incidence of pertussis in adults. A number of my college-age students have had it! If the vaccine isn't licensed for adults, why isn't it? Thanks!

I will be sitting for the 2003 ABMM written exam in September. I am currently working in a public health setting (TB surveillence) and I am now interested in beginning to apply for assistant lab director positions. I successfully completed a CPEP-approved Clinical and Public Health Microbiology Postdoctoral Fellowship in 1999. My question pertains to my qualifications to apply for director positions. In accordance with the CLIA '88 Final Rule, would I need to wait to be board certified before I could apply for a position? I'm not sure that I currently fit into any of the qualification pathways that are specified in the Final Rule. Could someone enlighten me?

Clinical diagnosis, gastroenteritis? A 10 year old girl had vomiting with no diarrhea three times last year for 10-15 days each time. She started having vomiting now. She was examined by a neurologist, gastroenterologist, and a Pediatrician who did lab tests and CT scans with no definitive diagnosis. She was treated by antibiotics and rehydration treatment. The vomiting episodes start after a tonsile infection. What could the diagnosis possibly be and what tests should be requested to determine the causes and treatment.
