Virology - molecular
What is the recommended method for doing neonatal surface cultures for herpes? We currently combine the swabs from the various sites into one culture and set it up by the ELVIS method. I believe that any of the culture methods are really designed for use when there are lesions, but the neonatologists and pediatricians continue to order these cultures and in research I have done they always talk about "cultures" for these sites. Should they be done by culture or should they be done by PCR? We do send out our CSF specimens for PCR.

HSV PCR in CSF: what is the kinetic of the pcr results during clinical course? Are there reasons to assume false negative pcr in the first week, or: positive results only in late phase (after 1 week)? On what studies is your opinion based on?
