Education and Scientific Societies Recommendations to Improve Visa Problems

The ASM joined about 30 academic and scientific groups in a letter to the Departments of State and Homeland Security and to the Office of Science and Technology Policy addressing steps to resolve visa problems that impede travel by foreign scientists and scholars to the US.

The NIH Office of Biotechnology Activities Holds IBC Workshop

The NIH OBA will hold a workshop, "Institutional Biosafety Committees: Promoting Optimal Practice Now and in the Future" on June 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, VA.  The ASM is participating in the workshop.

On May 7, President Obama released the Administration’s Fiscal Year 2010 Budget. The ASM Office of Public Affairs has developed a chart highlighting the funding levels for science and public health programs of interest to microbiology.

The ASM has partnered with a coalition of scientific organizations to develop a letter of support for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), a USDA competitive grants program created in the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008. AFRI is the successor to the National Research Initiative (NRI) and the Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems (IFAFS) and is housed within the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) which will soon replace the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES).

The American Society for Microbiology submitted comments on the proposed revisions to the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules, published in the March 4, 2009 Federal Register.

As a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has an additional $1.12 billion to fund projects and resources. NIAID will spend approximately 75 percent of its ARRA funds on unsolicited grants.
 
ASM Presentation to the Executive Order Working Group on Strengthening Biosecurity

ASM made recommendations to assure laboratory biosecurity and biosafety before the Working Group on Strengthening Biosecurity.
 
On February 25, the House Committee passed the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009. The ASM office of Public Affairs has developed a chart with preliminary information describing the funding levels for public health and science programs of interest to microbiology. Additional details will be posted as they become available.

The ASM submitted comments on FDA Federal Register Notice, Participation of Certain Population Subsets in Clinical Drug Trials.  The ASM’s Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities (CMIIM) reviewed the notice and drafted the comments.
 
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

A House and Senate conference report was agreed to on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and was signed by President Obama on February 17. The ASM office of Public Affairs has developed a chart with preliminary information describing the funding levels for public health and science programs of interest to microbiology. Additional details will be posted as they become available.
