The Alaska Branch of the American Society for Microbiology was established in 1983 with the original objective of increasing communication among Alaskan microbiologists.

The branch also supports science activities of K-12 students by providing awards at the state science fair and high school science symposium.

The branch is a non-profit, professional association. We have an annual meeting each spring, with the location of the meeting generally alternating between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The annual meeting provides a forum for local members to interact, and share poster and oral presentations. The meetings also include lectures given by nationally recognized scientists provided by the American Society for Microbiology through the Waksman Foundation for Microbiology Lecture Program.

Members of the Branch include faculty from the University of Alaska system, state and federally employed microbiologists, and employees of environmental consulting firms.
