OVERVIEW:
The Department of Biological Sciences is committed
to excellence in lower division education for majors and non-majors including a
strong laboratory experience. The faculty work closely together to support one
another and achieve student success.
We seek a well-rounded biologist with a strong background in
microbiology.
POSITION DUTIES:
In addition to
the responsibilities of the classification description, the specific position
includes the following responsibilities:
1. Teach lecture and lab
sections in microbiology.
2. Coordinate
microbiology course sections.
3. Participate in and provide innovative
ideas for the Allied Health curriculum.
4. Supervise maintenance of
microbial culture collection.
5. Maintain currency in the
biological sciences.
CLASSIFICATION

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possession of a California Community College
Credential authorizing full-time instruction in Biology OR
2. MasterŐs Degree in any
biological science OR
3. BachelorŐs
Degree in any biological science AND
MasterŐs Degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR
4. The
equivalent to District minimum qualifications described above. Equivalency may include any combination
of education, training, teaching, or related employment experience that would
be approximately equal to a MasterŐs Degree in this field. (Applicants wishing to be considered for employment under District
equivalency standards must submit a detailed statement explaining why you feel
you possess the equivalent to a MasterŐs Degree in the required field.)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will possess:
1. MasterŐs or Ph.D. in the
biological sciences.
2. Prior successful experience
teaching microbiology at the college level.
3. The ability to motivate
community college students to learn and to make dynamic and effective classroom
presentations using a variety of teaching methods.
4. Experience supervising and/or
working with a diverse student population.
5. A background in teaching
students to think critically and analytically.
6. A background with microbial laboratory
techniques, including knowledge of the features of microbes commonly used in an
introductory microbiology course.
7. Experience enhancing courses
with an online component.
8.
Outstanding organizational
skills.
9. Ability to coordinate with
lab support staff.
10. Outstanding communication abilities,
particularly with community college students.
11. A broad perspective and appreciation of
biology.
12. A strong background in both biological
concepts and an understanding of clinical applications of microbiology.
13. Proficiency in and enforcement of safe lab
practices and procedures.
14. An
understanding and experience in course design and curriculum development.
15. Good interpersonal skills and a commitment to the collective
success of the department.
16. A commitment to sustainability practices.

POLICY:
Employees
driving on District business or driving a District vehicle must possess a valid

SALARY / BENEFITS:
$46,088.40 - $70,774.44
per year, plus
doctorate stipend if applicable. Placement on the Academic salary schedule is
dependent on education and experience. The District offers a comprehensive
benefits package for employees and family members. The package includes:

Protection, participation in the State TeachersŐ Retirement System (STRS) and
457/403b tax shelter retirement plans.
