1. URGENT LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: California Senate Bill 1058 (pdf), the Medical Facility Infection Control & Prevention Act, will come up for a vote in the Senate in the next 10 days. This Act will establish guidelines for hospital and outpatient screening and reporting of certain infectious diseases such as MRSA. This will affect many of you who work in clinical laboratories as well as laboratory budgets and patient care. Please discuss this bill with colleagues, and if you have comments or concerns, contact your state senator or the author of the bill Senator Elaine Alquist (D-Santa Clara). Dr Ellen Jo Baron (Director of Clin Micro at Stanford) is very familiar with SB1058, and would be happy to answer questions you may have (cell: 650-380-6430). Santa Clara
