TANNER-SHAUGHNESSY MERIT AWARD (TSMA)

In 1981, the Illinois Society for Microbiology established a Merit Award dedicated to the charter members of this branch of the American Society for Microbiology.  This award, known as the “Tanner-Shaughnessy Merit Award” was named in honor of Fred W. Tanner, the first president of this Society, and Howard J. Shaughnessy, our eleventh President - both very prestigious educators and microbiologists.  These men, now deceased, have been chosen to represent our charter members out of the pages of history.

The Tanner-Shaughnessy Merit Award is given for time in service for the society, as well as for other efforts in the field of microbiology.  Each year those individuals who qualify will be honored, at the Fall Pasteur Award Meeting, by receiving an engraved document and a paperweight to commemorate the award.

Eligibility will be determined upon individual request and completion of the attached qualification sheet.  If  an individual has fulfilled all the criteria for membership and service, then they should complete the TSMA form and return it to the ISM Awards chairman.  Completed forms must be received no later than June 30, 1999, for further action by the awards committee.

ISM members should consider it an honor and a privilege to receive this merit award.  It is an appropriate recognition for unselfish service as an active member who has helped to provide professional enrichment for all ISM members.
