Activities

The PRSM promotes educational activities for the following areas of Microbiology:

  • Clinical
  • Industrial
  • Academic/ Research
  • Environmental

We also organize conferences or workshops according to the needs and/or requests of our members.

Affiliation to the American Society for Microbiology

The PRSM is affiliated to the ASM and is promotes the activities and programs offered by the ASM such as:

  • Membership in the ASM
  • Certification Program in Microbiology (National Registry)
  • ASM Foundation Lecturer Program
  • Visiting Scientists Program
  • Graduate Fellowships Program
  • Undergraduate Summer Internship Program
Scholarships and Awards

Acknowledging the importance of fostering the studies and the development of professionals in Microbiology, the PRSM offers the following scholarships and awards:

  • Scholarship for graduate studies
  • Travel Award for the Annual ASM Convention (Sponsored in part by Advanced Instruments Company).

    Prizes

    • Dr. Américo Pomales Lebrón - Given to the first three winning college students groups in the Microbiology Inter-University debate, Micro Olimpics.
    • Conference in Memoriam of Dr. Arturo L. Carrión - granted to an outstanding professional or scientist.
    • El-Khoury Medina Prize - granted to an outstanding professional in recognition of service to the PRSM.

    Publications

    The PRSM via its bulletin (PRSM-News) publishes articles on the most recent topics in Microbiology. It also informs on upcoming activities.

    Benefits for Regular Members

    Regular members, who recruit five new regular members during the current year, will have the right to a free membership for the following year.

    Any college professor who is a regular member and who recruits ten new student members, will have the right to a free membership for the following year.

    Any college professor who is a regular member and who takes twenty new student members to a PRSM activity will have the right to free admission to that activity as long as evidence of payment by students is presented and if the application is made before the deadline.

    Regular members who belong to the Board of Directors (except President, Secretary or Treasurer) and to the committees of the PRSM will have a right to apply for a fifty percent discount on the cost of the Annual Convention. The Board of Directors will evaluate the application.

    If his/her employer has paid the admission cost of regular member who works at the Annual Convention and is a member of the Board of Directors, the payment will be transferred as a contribution to PRSM and to next year’s membership.

    Professional Development and Certifications

    The PRSM provides, through its professional activities, continuing education credits via the Continuing Education Program of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico to those professionals who inquire for them.

    With the aim of maintaining high standards in the different areas of the profession, the PRSM offers the following certification exams in Puerto Rico once a year:

    • Registered Microbiologist
    • Specialist Microbiologist
    • Conditional Registrant
