2004 Meeting Minutes

1.

Thirty-two persons attended the Rio Grande Branch ASM Annual Meeting, held at Sul Ross State University in Alpine Texas on April 2-3 2004. Eight members attended the ASM Branch business meeting on April 3, 2004.
2.

It was agreed by the officers to give $20 travel reimbursement to all non-local (non-SRSU) students who were presenting either oral or poster presentations.

3.

Faculty members who were judging student presentations decided to award prizes of $100 to the best undergraduate and graduate presentations. All others get honorable mentions and free ASM student memberships.

4. The winners of the student presentations were:
Undergraduate: Christopher Bland UTEP
Graduate (dead heat between two): Linda Winona NMSU
Jaime Chapoy UTEP
5. The next Annual Meeting for 2005 will be held at NMSU in Las Cruces, NM in the early February timeframe.
6. Kevin Oshima was interested in pursuing the development of a branch website on the internet and will look into whether we can get any reimbursement from national ASM to do this. Kevin would also like a list of points of contact for each institution represented by the region.
7. The question came up on how we can increase membership of national ASM members in the regional branch. Can branch membership be free? Can there be a 3-year membership without having to re-enroll? Can we obtain a list from ASM of national members in the NM-West TX area?
8. There was a question as to which institutions currently had ASM Student Chapters. The only one at this time is UTEP (with a $5/year membership fee). SRSU asked for branch approval to start a Student Chapter; this proposal was approved.
9. The Treasurer’s report that we had $4071.42 as of 1 April, 2004 was approved.
