CALL FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENT POSTER PRESENTATIONS AT THE 2008 SCASM ANNUAL MEETING, NOVEMBER 14-15 IN SAN DIEGO

NOTE FROM SCASM PRESIDENT SUSAN NOVAK: "Last year SCASM, in conjunction with bioMerieux Incorporated, sponsored 3 graduate student poster winners to attend the 2008 National ASM meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. All three students presented their posters at the ASM national meeting. SCASM encourages students within our region and hopes to see more graduate students at the 2008 annual meeting. The student travel awards are perpetual awards and will be given out each year to the top 3 poster winners at our annual meeting in November."

These students were recognized by SCASM for their experimental work in the area of microbiology. SCASM Judges were: Megan Fullerton and Kathy Dickey.

  • First Place: Adella Fejeran, 12th Grade, Mt. Miguel High School. "Antioxidant Protection of Escherichia coli Against UV Radiation." Advisor: Todd Linke.
  • Second Place: Marie Nguyen, 12th Grade, Mt. Miguel High School. "Effect of Nutrient Additives on Ethanol Production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae." Advisor: Todd Linke.
  • Honorable Mention: Christina Catabay, 12th Grade, Bonita Vista High School. "The Power of Antimicrobials." Advisor: Michelle Mardahl-Dumesnil.
  • Honorable Mention: Natalie Prussak, 10th Grade, Torrey Pines High School, "Impact of Castor Oil versus Soap and Sanitizer On Bacteria." Advisor: Julia Newman.
  • Honorable Mention: Alicia Thomas, 11th Grade, The Preuss School UCSD, "Extract from Cinnamon/Spearmint Gum and Its Ability to Inhibit Bacteria Growth." Advisor: Anne Artz.
