Courses and Workshops of Interest to Division F Members
Introductory Clinical Mycology Help for the Beginner
Sat. May 17-Sunday May 18
(Prior to the ASM Meeting)
Faculty: GD Roberts, NL Goodman, KW Koneman, GW Procop
This workshop is designed to introduce basic clinical mycology to those not
acquainted with the field. Technologist/Microbiologists
will be able to recognize fungi in clinical specimens; identify common filamentous
fungi and yeasts; interpret fungal serologic test
results and understand the use of antifungal susceptibility testing. Case presentations
will illustrate the selection of appropriate
clinical specimens, use of appropriate laboratory testing and importance of
communication between the laboratorian and physician.
Participants will gain an appreciation for this discipline that has a direct
impact on patient care.
Pathogenic Fungi in Humans and Animals
Date: Friday, May 30, 2003 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Place: San Antonio, TX
Cosponsors: National Laboratory Training Network and the Texas Department of
Health
The workshop will feature Lynne Sigler and Richard Summerbell and is based on
their extensive contributions to the recently published
second edition of Pathogenic Fungi in Humans and Animals edited by Dexter Howard.
Participants in the workshop will receive
a copy of this valuable new book (a value of $225 if purchased retail) as part
of their registration fee of $ 280. Presentations will
consider the current taxonomy, colonial and microscopic features and clinical
significance of selected pathogenic and opportunistic
members of the Eurotiales (Aspergillus, Penicillium, Paecilomyces), Hypocreales
(Acremonium, Fusarium, Trichoderma),
Ophiostomatales (Sporothrix), Onygenales (Ajellomyces, Chrysosporium, Onychocola),
Microascales (Scopulariopsis), in addition
to some miscellaneous hyphomycetes, coelomycetes and basidiomycetes. The influence
that molecular phylogenetic studies
is having on some groups will also be considered. This workshop follows the
ISHAM Congress but is not a part of that event.
