Annual Business Meeting
Division Y officers and interested Division Y members met during the Annual General Meeting to discuss Division Y activities. Division Y Chair Ralph Timperi led discussion on the nomination of new officers, development of symposia and poster sessions for next year, and Division Y communications via our website and list-serv. If you are interested in planning or convening a session for Division Y at the 2008 Annual General Meeting, please contact Ralph or Chair-Elect, Paul Swenson as soon as possible. Plans must be submitted to ASM by the end of August. For the upcoming year we will try to use the Division Y list-serv to communicate more routinely about opportunities for member input into Division activities, so make sure to subscribe to the list-serv if you have not already.
Division Y Lecture
2007 Gen-Probe Joseph Award Presentation
The 2007 Gen-Probe Joseph Award was presented to Division Y lecturer James M. Hughes, M.D. Dr. Hughes holds joint appointments in the School of Medicine and the Rollins School of Public Health, serving as Director of the Emory Center for Global Safe Water, Director of the Emory Program in Global Infectious Diseases, and Associate Director of the Southeastern Center for Emerging Biological Threats. Before joining Emory in April 2005, Dr. Hughes served as Director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Hughes presented the Division Y lecture titled "Global Microbial Threats: Lessons Learned" as part of the symposium "Innovative Activities to Build Global Public Health Laboratory Capacity, the Achilles' Heel of the Disease Detection and Response System."
For the 2007 Annual General Meeting, ASM decided to combine all Divisions into one mixer (except for Food Microbiology Division P which held their traditional annual banquet and regala at a separate location). While the format was a bit different than from prior years, it was an excellent opportunity to meet and network with other ASM attendees from Divsion Y (among others). If anyone has pictures from the mixer and would like to share them, please send to Brian Sauders (email@example.com) and he'll post them on the Division Y website.
