2014 Moselio Schaechter Distinguished Service Award Laureate

SCHAECHTER Singh 2

Yogendra Singh, Ph.D., Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi, India, has been honored with the 2014 Moselio Schaechter Distinguished Service Award (sponsored by GSK) for his leadership and commitment to furthering microbiology in India.

Singh received his Ph.D. from Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi and his postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He joined the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases as a National Research Council Research Associate to work on the anthrax toxin. While working in the laboratory of Stephen H. Leppla, NIAID, NIH, he showed the importance of proteolytic activation of anthrax toxin for biological activity. He returned to India in 1991 and joined the CSIR-IGIB, as a scientist and group leader where he continued his work on anthrax as well as his collaboration with Dr. Leppla. During this time, he also started work on Mycobacterium tuberculosis. His laboratory was one of the first to characterize and understand the role played by kinases and phosphatases in the pathogenesis of the bacterium.

Over the years, Singh has been involved in several academic and public awareness programs. He has organized training programs in microbiology for science teachers and students, and has mentored 34 graduate students and over a hundred undergraduate students at the University of Delhi. Leppla says, “Singh has played an important role in bringing scientific research in India to its current high standard, and in fostering extensive, positive interactions between Indian scientists and those in other countries.”
