BD Caliendo

Angela M. Caliendo, M.D., Ph.D., Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, is the winner of the 2014 BD Award for Research in Clinical Microbiology. Christine Ginocchio, North Shore-LIJ Health System Laboratories, says “Caliendo is acknowledged world-wide as a leading expert in molecular diagnostics, with a major emphasis on HIV and quantitative virology in the transplantation setting.”

Caliendo is Professor, Executive Vice Chair of Medicine, and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She received a M.D. and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and afterwards completed an internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Infectious Diseases fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Caliendo has extensive experience performing and developing molecular diagnostic tests for the detection and quantification of infectious diseases. She has designed and executed multi-center clinical studies and chaired working groups that have evaluated CMV, HCV, and HBV viral load assays. Her laboratory provides infrastructure and molecular testing for numerous multi-center clinical studies. She is also a member of the Aspergillus Technology Consortium, which maintains a repository of clinical specimens from subjects diagnosed with or at risk of Aspergillus infections and tests new diagnostic assays for Aspergillus infections.

Caliendo is an active volunteer. She is an Editor for the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Virology, and current Past-President of the Pan-American Society for Clinical Virology. She has also held the position of President of the Association of Molecular Pathology and member of the CAP Microbiology Resource Committee.
