February 23, 2011 - ASM Statement on the President’s FY 2012 Budget for Science

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) applauds the President’s proposed FY 2012 budget request for its clear support of scientific research.  The President’s budget recognizes that research and development are absolutely essential to the Nation’s future and to ensuring human health and well being.  The proposed R&D funding increases for programs in bioenergy, climate change, food safety, and biomedical research will help create new jobs and train tomorrow’s technical workforce.  The ASM appreciates the President’s commitment to federal R&D funding despite current fiscal constraints. R&D funding provides the foundation for future advances in science and medicine. The proposed FY 2012 funding will help sustain the Nation’s capacity for  R&D innovations that protect public health, advance scientific knowledge, and reinvigorate economic development.
