J. Victor Garcia Martinez is a Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology in the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), the Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases (IGHID) and the Div. of Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill., n, nGarcia and his team develop novel small animal models for the study of human specific pathogens. Their goal is to provide useful avenues for the translation of laboratory research into clinical implementation., n, nTheir research addresses issues of fundamental importance to our understanding of the molecular basis of viral pathogenesis. For this they have implemented novel in vivo models that recapitulate key aspects of the human pathogen interphase. Since their landmark publications describing the humanized BLT (bone marrow, liver, thymus), TOM (t-cell only mice) and MOM (myeloid only mice) models they have been widely used to address key questions in HIV biology, persistence and cure.
