Martin C.J. Maiden is Professor of Molecular Epidemiology in the Department of Zoology at University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of Hertford College Oxford, the Royal College of Pathologists, the Royal Society of Biology, and of the American Academy of Microbiology. , nAfter an initial training in microbiology, during which he developed an enduring interest in infectious disease and public health, Martin Maiden’s graduate studies used molecular, genetic, and biochemical techniques to study sugar transport proteins in Escherichia coli. At this time he became interested multi-disciplinary and evolutionary approaches to investigating biological problems. In 1997 he took the position of a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellowship in Oxford up to expand the scope of his research activities. At present his group combines evolutionary and population techniques to investigate a range of bacterial pathogens.
