Finkel Steven 250

Steven E. Finkel is a Professor in the Molecular & Computational Biology section of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Southern California. He also serves as a Senior Scientist of the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI), an NSF-funded Science & Technology Center focused on characterizing the microbiota of subseafloor communities. Research in his laboratory focuses on the mechanisms of long-term survival & evolution of bacteria in laboratory and natural environments, with a particular focus on long-term stationary phase. Experimental approaches include identifying mutational changes associated with the GASP phenotype, whole genome resequencing of evolving culture populations, understanding the role of error-prone DNA polymerases in long-term survival, and studying the effect of culture and natural environments on metabolic adaptation, including the role of various catabolic pathways required for survival of long periods of nutrient stress.
