Dr. Thandavarayan Ramamurthy is a National Chair at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad, India. He worked as a Scientist at the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Kolkata for more than 20 years. He has a long research experience in the field of enteric diseases. He and his group have established several molecular and immunological tools for the direct detection of cholera. His works on molecular typing of Vibrio cholerae gave information on the clonality of this pathogen that has caused several epidemics of cholera in many countries. One of his important discoveries is the identification of a V. cholerae O139 synonym Bengal. His works on non-cholera vibrios emphasized their significance in the clinical microbiology. His investigations on the Vibrio parahaemolyticus O3:K6 has established its first pandemic of diarrhea.
