Dr. Belkaid work brought new understanding of the factors controlling tissue immunity and immune regulation to microbes. Notably, her laboratory identified immune mediators of pathogen persistence and uncovered a role for regulatory T cells in the control of microbial persistence. Her research also uncovered factors controlling the induction of regulatory T cells tissues. Her work on the interplay between nutrition and the immune system uncovered a role for defined metabolites in the control of both tolerance and immunity and revealed how the immune system adapts malnutrition. Finally, her laboratory pioneered the exploration of the interaction between the microbiota and infections and revealed that the microbiota was required for the induction of adaptive immunity to skin and gut pathogens.
