ASM FY 2015 Funding Chart -  The ASM’s Office of Public Affairs has developed a chart highlighting proposed funding levels for the federal agencies and programs of importance to microbiology and the ASM membership.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

  • The total request for the NIH in FY15 is $30.4 billion; a 0.7 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $30.2 billion.     

National Science Foundation (NSF)

  • $7.3  billion, a 1.2 percent increase for NSF. Research and Related at 5.8 billion would decrease by .03 percent
  • $709 million for the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO), a 1.8 percent decrease from the FY14 enacted level of $721 million
  • $5.807 billion for Research and Related Activities, a 0.03 percent decrease from the FY14 enacted level of $5.809 billion
  • $890 million for Education and Human Resources, a 5.1 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $847 million 
  • $201 million for Major Research Equipment & Facilities Construction, a 0.5 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $200 million 

Department of Energy (DOE)

  • $5.1 billion for the DOE, Office of Science
  • $325 million for The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), a 16 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $280 million

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

  • The total request for CDC in FY15 is $6.6 billion, a 3.5 percent decrease from FY14 enacted levels. The request does propose new programs with additional funding including;  a $45 million increase for Global Health Security and $30 million for a new Antibiotic Resistance initiative that enhances surveillance and lab capacity; the reductions for CDC are for prevention programs that the Administration says the Affordable Care Act will pick up.
  • $50 million for CDC Food Safety, a 25 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $40 million   
  • $445 million for Emerging, Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases, a 14 percent increase over the FY14 level of $390 million; including $30 million for Advanced Molecular Detection

Department of Agriculture (USDA)

  • $1.5 billion for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) including $883 million for Research and Education Activities, an 8 percent increase over FY14
  • $325 million for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), a 2.8 percent increase over the FY 2014 enacted level of $316 million
  • $1.136 billion for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), a 3 percent increase from the FY14 enacted level of $1.102 billion

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

  • The total request for FDA in FY15 is $4.74 billion, with $2.2 billion in user fees, an 8 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $4.39 billion
  • $903 million for Foods, a 2.3 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $883 million; including an increase of $263 million for food safety activities
  • $480 million for Human Drugs, a 3 percent increase over the FY14 enacted level of $466 million  
  • $29 million to advance protection of human and animal health through integrated monitoring of antibiotic resistance

Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA)

  • $79 million for the Broad Spectrum Antimicrobials Program (BSA)
