ASM-NAYS National Science Communication Challenge

Announcement: May 31, 2014

"Due to the large number of submissions to the National Science Communication Challenge, ASM and NAYS will be taking a few extra weeks to review and choose finalists. The exhibition of finalists will also be pushed back to a later date. We will keep you updated with any new details through the ASM and NAYS websites."

About

The National Science Communication Challenge is an opportunity to develop your communication skills and attend an international scientific conference!  As scientists, we have a responsibility to educate the public on issues of a scientific nature that directly affect them, such as vaccinations, food safety, and antibiotic resistance. The “Challenge” asks university students to create a new communication tool—such as a video, radio script, or print advertisement—that corrects a common misconception held by the public about science. Because the goal is to educate the public, teams must complete and submit their project in both Urdu and English.

This competition is open to students in Pakistan ONLY.

Sponsor

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS) are jointly sponsoring the National Science Communication Challenge.

Prize

An all-expense paid trip to the ASM Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in Washington, DC, held 5-9 September 2014.

Terms

Submission Deadline: April 30, 2014. Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.

Who May Enter

The “Challenge” is open to teams of no less than two, but no more than five. All team members must be students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree studies studies or professionals who have completed their degree within the last 5 years.

How to Enter

  1. As a team, pick the issue you wish to address. While there are many commonly misunderstood issues in science, focus your attention on microbiology-related issues: infectious disease, antimicrobials, vaccines/immunizations, epidemiology, food safety, genetics, and others.
  2. Create a tool in both English and Urdu that addresses your chosen issue and falls into one of the categories listed below.
    1. Radio – Develop a script for a radio announcement; length 5-10 minutes.
    2. Television – develop and record a video; 1-5 minutes in length.
    3. Print – develop a poster (in the style of an advertisement/promotional poster, not a presentation poster for a conference), brochure, mailing postcard, etc.
  3. Email your project or the link to your project and the Submission Supplement Form to international@asmusa.org with the subject line “NSCC Submission” by 11:59pm PTZ on 30 April 2014.

Finalists

An ASM and NAYS panel of experts and members of the public will judge the quality of the submissions and determine 20 finalist teams. All teams that submit an entry will be invited to present their projects at the National Science Communication Challenge Exhibition in Islamabad, held June 2014. However, only finalists will receive monetary assistance to attend the Exhibition.

Winning Team

The winning team will be chosen during the Exhibition. The members of the winning team will receive an all-expense paid trip to the ASM Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in Washington, DC, held 5-9 September 2014. There, the winning team will present their tool during a special session to the international audience at ICAAC. The winning team will also have the opportunity to visit ASM Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Evaluation Criteria

Each submission will be evaluated by the following criteria:

  1. Does it fall within the one of the three allowable categories: Radio, Television, Print?
  2. Does it accurately explain the issue it is addressing?
  3. Does it explain the issue in a way that those without a scientific background can understand?
