The Honorable Nancy Pelosi

Office of the Speaker

Washington, DC 20515

Dear Speaker Pelosi:

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the largest single life science Society with over 40,000 members, is writing to urge you to provide $7 billion in funding over the President’s budget request in order to increase funding for programs under the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education (LHHS) appropriations bill when the final Continuing Resolution is considered for FY 2007. This amount represents a goal of the 109th Congress and is critical to sustain vital LHHS programs, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The LHHS appropriations bill supports public health and research programs that are the nation’s primary investment in biomedical research and disease prevention and control. Fiscal support for the NIH has steadily eroded since 2003 because appropriations have flattened or even decreased. This downward trend in the NIH budget translates into less funding for important areas of research needed to accelerate drug and vaccine discovery at a time of new disease threats.

We urge you to address the serious erosion of funding for NIH and CDC by providing additional funding in the full year Continuing Resolution which is about to be considered in the 110th Congress. Thank you for your support for biomedical research.

Sincerely,

Diane E. Griffin, Ph.D., ASM President
Ruth L. Berkelman, M.D., Chair, Public and Scientific Affairs Board
Gail H. Cassell, Ph.D., Chair, Committee on Biomedical Research
