The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the largest single life science society in the world representing over 42,000 members, is writing to urge you to support the House Appropriations Committee approved funding levels for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided in the Fiscal Year (FY) 1999 appropriations bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies, HR 4274.
The bill reported by the House Committee on Appropriations contains needed funding increases to support a higher level of national investment in biomedical research to capitalize on scientific achievements and opportunities to respond to a growing array of diseases that kill and disable Americans and to maintain the competitive edge and scientific leadership of the United States into the 21st century. The bill also includes essential funding for the important public health programs of the CDC, which has primary responsibility for surveillance and detection of emerging diseases which threaten the security and well being of the entire world.
The ASM urges you to support this critical funding for the NIH and the CDC and to work to ensure the passage of HR 4274. Thank you for your commitment and support for biomedical research and public health programs that are vital to ensuring a healthy America.
