The Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education (JMBE), a peer-reviewed publication of the American Society for Microbiology, announced on February 17, 2012 that an article published in its December 2011 issue (volume 12, no. 2) was recently selected by Science magazine for its Editors’ Choice section. For this section, each Science editor selects one article per week from another publication to highlight.
The JMBE article selected was “Introductory Biology Textbooks Under-Represent Scientific Process,” by Dara B. Duncan of the City College of New York, Alexandra Lubman of the Bard High School Early College in Manhattan, and Sally G. Hoskins of the City College of New York. Featured by Science during the week of February 3, the journal article urges authors and publishers to emphasize the scientific process in textbooks, rather than simply the outcomes of the process. Duncan et al. contend that explaining the steps along the path to scientific discoveries may reap many benefits, namely, helping support student interest in biology, stimulating analytical skills, and inspiring students to pursue science.
