Prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) such as scrapie, BSE (mad cow disease), Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and chronic wasting disease are infectious neurodegenerative protein misfolding diseases. Byron Caughey's laboratory has studied the structures, biosynthesis, propagation, diversity, and interspecies transmissibilities of mammalian prions. Their development of new ultrasensitive prion detection methods and identification of numerous inhibitors of prion propagation have enhanced prospects for the early diagnosis and treatment of prion diseases.
