ASM President, Jeffery F. Miller, traveled to Dhaka, Bangladesh to visit with key scientific leaders at the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icdd,b). Leveraging Miller’s visit, ASM’s Ambassador, Firdausi Qadri, and Young Ambassador, Taufiqur Bhuiyan, organized a one-day ASM Scientific Workshop for 180 ASM members. In addition to a highly publicized scientific lecture by Dr. Miller, the event included a pre-recorded virtual lecture and live Q&A session via Skype by AAM Fellow James Shapiro, 13 scientific presentations, 19 poster presentations, and the inauguration of the first ASM BioResource Center in Bangladesh at the Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives (ideSHi). Qadri remarked that “the ASM members all feel very privileged to have had this interaction with [President Miller].” Shapiro also stated that “It was very satisfying to know that my virtual lecture helped educate students half way around the world. The Skype Q&A was a real treat, meeting students and teachers from so far away in real time.” Encouraged by the interest in the event, Qadri is already planning several university visits around Bangladesh to implement similar workshops.
