Millis-Colwell Exchange Program for Early Career Scientists - 2012 Grant Recipients Announced

Funded jointly by ASM and the Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM Australia), the Grant enables one member from each society to present an abstract at the annual General Meeting of the other society and to spend a week at nearby research laboratory. 

 Filipa Godoy-Vitorino, a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute, Walnut Creek, CA, was named as the 2012 Millis-Colwell U.S. Grant recipient by the American Society for Microbiology. Godoy-Vitorino’s current research interests includes community profiling and metagenomics using NGS to characterize the microbiome of the Hoatzin, a folivorous bird, foregut and mine for enzymes that deconstruct plant biomass and thus are relevant to the development of cellulosic biofuels. Godoy-Vitorino will travel to the Australian Centre for Ecogenomics at the University of Queensland in Brisbane Australia from July 6-12. Godoy-Vitorino and host Dr. Philip Hugenholtz will finalize the analytical approach of an ongoing single-cell genomics project which aims to understand the self-contained ecosystem of the Hoatzin ciliate (Holotrich) and compare it with rumen ciliate data. Prior to her visit to the University of Queensland, Godoy-Vitorino will attend the Australian Society for Microbiology’s Annual Scientific Meeting & Exhibition in Brisbane, Australia on July 1-4. While at the meeting she will present her abstract titled Revealing The Microbiome Associated with A Ciliate Protozoan Cell in the Crop of the Herbivorous South American Hoatzin.   
 Lee Hudek, a Post Graduate student at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Deakin University, Burwood, Australia, was named the Australian Grant recipient by the Australian Society for Microbiology. Hudek’s current research concerns the cellular responses to essential and non-essential metals in the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme, with a focus on identifying and characterizing metal transport pathways. Through this grant Hudek will attend the ASM General Meeting on June 16-19 in San Francisco, CA. There he will present his abstract, Cyanobacterial Metal Homeostasis Systems, and be recognized during the International Reception. Following the ASM General Meeting, Hudek will visit host John Meeks at the University of California, Davis for two months. Hudeck will work with Meeks and his research group to investigate how metals are involved in cellular differentiation in cyanobacteria.
