But, don’t just stop with the General Meeting The ASM Education Board offers two other opportunities scheduled in Boston just prior to the 2008 General Meeting.
- ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators
Most postdoctoral experiences provide abundant opportunities to develop as a researcher, but limited training in effective teaching and mentoring. To address this need the ASM sponsors the annual ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE). Strategically scheduled just prior to the ASM General Meeting on a college campus in a location near the General Meeting, the ASMCUE brings nearly 300 undergraduate faculty, teaching postdoctoral scientists and graduate students together for 3 days of scientific updates, effective teaching strategies, genuine assessment, and networking. The conference includes plenary and concurrent sessions, posters on teaching, and exhibits with publishers. Concurrent sessions come in two formats, "Learn Something New" focuses on scientific updates and "Try Something New" focuses on pedagogy. (For more information visit asmcue.org)
- ASM Presentation Institute for Graduate Students in Microbiology (ASMGAP)
(Please pass this information on to any qualified students you may know since ASMGAP is only open to Graduate Students.)
As you are no doubt aware, one important skill regardless of the career pathway one chooses in the microbiological sciences is the ability to provide a clear and effective presentation of scientific research. This training will develop skills needed to make successful scientific presentations:
- Elevator talk ideas
- Oral and poster presentation
- Abstract preparation, titles, and ethics
Here’s the ASM Conference information that 83% of you requested! ASM Conferences seek to identify emerging or underrepresented topics of broad scientific significance. With conference attendance from 100 to 700 registrants, ASM fosters interdisciplinary and international exchange and collaboration with other scientific organizations.
