The American College of Microbiology (College), one of the core components of ASM's Professional Practice Committee, has as its mission promoting the high quality and ethical practice of the microbiology and immunology professions for the benefit of human, animal, and environmental well-being. The College administers highly stringent certification examinations for clinical and industrial microbiologists and immunologists and accredits postdoctoral training programs in clinical microbiology and immunology.

Already Certified?
American Board of Medical Microbiology certifies the expertise of doctoral-level microbiologists seeking to direct public health or clinical microbiology laboratories.

American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology certifies the expertise of doctoral-level immunologists seeking to direct laboratories engaged in the practice of medical laboratory immunology.

National Registry of Certified Microbiologists certifies professional microbiologists at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels in biological safety; food; and pharmaceutical and medical device.

Postdoctoral Training
The Committee on Postgraduate Educational Programs (CPEP) develops standards to train doctoral-level (Ph.D., M.D., Sc.D., O.D., Dr. P.H., etc.) microbiologists and immunologists in the clinical profession of laboratory medicine; CPEP approved programs are located throughout the United States.
