Mission
The Professional Practice Committee’s (PPC) mission is to provide professional development opportunities and content to members to increase their skill, enhance their job performance and contribute to the profession. The PPC will serve the microbiology profession by representing clinical microbiologists and immunologists, microbiologists working in the pharmaceutical, environmental and food industries, and biological safety officers. To achieve its mission the Committee will:

Coordinate ASM's professional development activities on behalf of its constituents.

Develop and market new products and services that benefit the practice of microbiology.

Educate the public about how the profession improves public and environmental health.

Provide a identifiable voice in ASM governance for constituents.

Maintain the quality and rigor and preserve the legitimacy of the credentialing programs.

Engage members and solicit their feedback on enhancements of existing products and services and proposed new activities.

Strategic Goals and Progress to Date
Goal 1. Development of Evidence-based Practice Guidelines (EBPG). The PPC has embarked on the development of its first evidence-based practice guideline. The topic is is bloodstream infections, and it is scheduled to be published before the 2012 ASM General Meeting.
Goal 2. Development of Clinical Microbiology Portal. The Clinical Microbiology portal, http://clinmicro.asm.org, was launched in December 2011. It is overseen by a subcommittee of the PPC and comments about the site are highly encouraged.
Goal 3. Development of Tools to Mentor and Promote the Clinical Microbiology Profession. An internet-based mentoring network is being developed and should be available on the portal in April 2012.
Goal 4. Collaborate with Regional Clinical Societies to Strengthen the Profession. To be discussed in July 2012.
Goal 5. Ensure that the products and services of ASM effectively meet the needs of practitioners. Ongoing.
Goal 6. Ensure the financial viability of the American College of Microbiology. Ongoing.
