New Appointments to ASM’s International Ambassador Network

Following a highly competitive application process and extensive review, seventeen ASM Ambassadors were appointed in November 2012. These appointments expand ASM’s worldwide network of in-country representatives to 87 countries and further enhance the Society’s ability to engage our international members, partners and stakeholders.

Scientific Writing and Publishing Workshop

Program Description:
This workshop aims to assist in the development of the skills needed to write and submit scientific manuscripts with the ultimate goal of improving the dissemination of research and enhanced knowledge sharing.  The seminar will provide participants with insight and training into processes required to successfully publish a scientific article. The sample 2 ½ hour virtual program is as follows:

9:00-9:20 am               Introductions, Overview, & Discussion of Why do we write

9:20-9:40 am               Ethics in Scientific Publishing

What constitutes authorship?  Can data ever be duplicated?

9:40-10:00 am             Nuts and Bolts of Writing a Scientific Manuscript.

When do you start writing?  Before you write.  What are the parts of a scientific manuscript?

10:00-10:20 am           Powerful Titles and Compelling Abstracts

The key elements of a title and abstract will be presented.  The discussion will include what makes a good title and abstract, things to avoid, and tips for writing titles and abstracts.

10:20-10:40 am           Tables and Figures

What to put in and what to leave out.  How much detail to include in the legend.

10:40-11:00 am           The Submission Process

When do you submit your manuscript?  What is required to make a submission?  What is the time frame of a submission?  When is it proper to contact the journal?

11:00-11:20 am           Dealing with reviews

The review process will make the manuscript better.  Do not take it personally.  How do you respond?  What steps are involved in the response process?

11:20-11:30 am           Closing comments


Virtual Speaker Biography:

Larry McDaniel
University of Mississippi Medical Center

Larry McDaniel received his doctorate at the University of Oklahoma. His postdoctoral training was the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he rose to the position of assistant professor.  He accepted a faculty position at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in the Department of Surgery and is now a Professor in the Departments of Surgery, Microbiology, and Medicine.   McDaniel's lab works on host-pathogen interactions using model systems of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.   His lab also investigates the host immune response against bacterial antigens with an emphasis on vaccine development. McDaniel is active in the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). He has served on several committees.  He is a Fellow in the Infectious Disease Society of America and The American Academy of Microbiology. He currently serves on the editorial board of Infection and Immunity, and is on the founding editorial board of mBio, an ASM Access Publication.

ASM Young Ambassador Program

ASM Young Ambassadors are dynamic young leaders, who represent ASM in their home country, facilitating networking, professional development, and collaboration to strengthen science globally. ASM Young Ambassadors mobilize the next generation of scientists to develop innovative approaches to meet the Grand Challenges in Science.

Activities

• Engage other young/early career scientists:
• Promote networking and collaboration locally and globally
• Leverage ASM resources to meet the needs of young microbiologists
• Develop novel approaches to advancing the careers and science of your peers
• Raise awareness of the benefits of ASM global communities to students and young professionals
• Advance ASM's mission of knowledge sharing for the advancement of science, and the improvement of the world we share!

Eligibility

• Have current ASM membership
• Are in the process of obtaining or have obtained an advanced academic degree, within the past five years and are working in any of the microbiology disciplines
• Have excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience using social media
• Have demonstrated leadership in their scientific or academic community

Application Process

• Applications should be submitted to ASM International Affairs via the International Online Applications website, https://intlgrants.asm.org
• Applications must include: curriculum vitae; ASM Member Number; ASM and non-ASM meetings regularly attended; area of scientific interest; membership in national, regional, and international scientific societies; a cover letter explaining the member's interest in becoming a Young Ambassador and highlighting relevant skills, education, or experience; and an action plan with their proposed activities in the Young Ambassador Role
• Young Ambassadors are elected for an initial 1-year followed by a formal review and opportunity to extend for an additional 2 years
