Biodefense and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting

February 6-9, 2011 | Omni Shoreham Hotel | Washington, DC

As technology changes and research evolves, professionals involved in biodefense are being challenged to move faster to respond to the growing threat of bioterrorism.  In February, scientist, physicians, public health researchers, and policy makers from around the world will converge on Washington, DC to:

  • Discover the latest research from microbial sciences related to biodefense and bioterrorism
  • Discuss new information on preventative modalities, therapeutics, and clinical diagnoses related to biothreat agents
  • Learn about the most recent trends in the management and planning of biodefense programs

Stay up-to-date with the recent advances, participate in sessions led by luminaries in the field, and network with the decision makers who are shaping the future of the bidefense research agenda at the 9th Annual Biodefense and Emerging Disease Research Meeting.

The 2011 ASM Biodefense website is currently under development. The complete website will launch on Thursday, November 11.

Annual Meetings

General Meeting
ASM's General Meeting is held annually in the late spring and brings together microbiologists from diverse environments. ASM members in 27 topical divisions work together to create a program that is informative and educational in the following broad categories: diagnostic microbiology and epidemiology; pathogenesis and host response mechanisms; general and applied microbiology (including environmental microbiology); and molecular microbiology, physiology, and virology. Workshops in a small-scale hands-on setting are offered immediately preceding the meeting for an additional fee.

ICAAC
Held annually in the fall, the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) is the world's premier meeting on infectious diseases and antimicrobial agents, organized by the American Society for Microbiology. More than 12,000 scientists from around the world participate in ICAAC to exchange information and foster global solutions to the challenges of HIV/AIDS, anthrax, smallpox, SARS, and other topics including bioterrorism preparedness, recognition, detections, and medical treatments. Whether you are a first-time or a regular attendee, ICAAC meets your educational needs by providing timely information to improve healthcare and the management of infectious diseases.

Biodefense
ASM launched its first meeting on Biodefense Research in March 2003, and will hold the sixth annual meeting February 24 - 27, 2008. The purpose of this meeting is to bring together individuals who are carrying out research to defend against the growing threat of bioterrorism and decision makers shaping the future biodefense research agenda, recognizing that emerging infectious diseases serve as a paradigm for handling the public threat of bioterrorism. Attendees will be able to discuss the “state of the art” in the biodefense area with others in the field and will gain a greater appreciation of how various research projects are progressing. It is intended for scientists, public health researchers and policy makers who need to be informed about the latest threats, detections and actions to take in today’s volatile climate. Using the highest standards for its selection process, the Biodefense Research Program Committee organizes a program that includes keynote addresses by leaders in the field of biodefense, along with symposia, focus and poster sessions featuring the latest biodefense information.

Education Conference
The ASM’s Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) is an annual interactive three-day conference for life science faculty. The conference allows faculty to stay current by providing updates in microbiology and related sciences as well as the latest research in teaching and learning science. Throughout the conference, the plenary, concurrent, small-group discussions, poster, and exhibit sessions engage participants in formal and informal professional development, allowing them to network with colleagues and showcase their own initiatives. As a result, faculty take away effective strategies and new ideas to implement in their classroom to improve students’ understanding of microbiology.

ABRCMS
The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is the premier biomedical conference for encouraging undergraduate students to pursue advanced training and careers in the biomedical sciences. Join more than 2000 students to hear about significant scientific research in the biomedical sciences, learn about graduate programs and research opportunities, share your research, and meet scientists who will serve as role models and mentors in the future.
