Heatley-Payne Exchange Program for Early Career Scientists: 2012 Grant Recipient

This grant, managed jointly by the ASM and the UK’s Society for General Microbiology (SGM), allows for the exchange of a member from each society to present an abstract at the annual General Meeting of the other society and to spend a week at a nearby research laboratory. 

  Joseph Hyser, an Instructor at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, was selected as the 2012 U.S. grant recipient by ASM. His current work aims to functionally characterize the rotavirus NSP4 viroporin and identify compounds that inhibit viroporin activity. Hyser will attend the SGM Spring Meeting in Dublin, Ireland on March 26-29 where he will present the abstract, Rotavirus NSP4 Viroporin Activity in the Endoplasmic Reticulum Releases Calcium Stores and Elevates Cytoplasmic Calcium. Following the meeting Hyser will join Stephen Griffin and Richard Foster at the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Leeds, England, UK. This visit will continue a collaboration that aims to define a series of potent NSP4 inhibitors for subsequent testing in cell culture systems. Hyser will work with his hosts to obtain training on the viroporin-mediated liposome dye release assay developed by Griffin and to screen a new library of drug-like molecules for more potent NSP4 inhibitors.
