March 19, 2014 – ASM Endorses the American Cures Act

The Honorable Richard Durbin
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Durbin:

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the largest single life science Society with over 39,000 members, is writing to endorse the American Cures Act (S 2115), which would create a trust fund to support a mandatory funding stream for biomedical research supported by the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies involved in biomedical research. The bill provides that funding would be available to the Appropriations Committee to supplement discretionary appropriations for the agencies included in the legislation.

The ASM applauds your leadership in introducing this legislation which would provide a sustained and predictable funding source for biomedical research. The ASM would be pleased to work with you and your colleagues as the legislation receives attention in Congress.

Jeff F. Miller, Ph.D., President, American Society for Microbiology
