William G. Coleman, Jr., Ph.D., served as the first permanent scientific director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) and the first African-American scientific director in the history of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Intramural Research Program. As scientific director, Dr. Coleman directs the overall portfolio of trans-disciplinary research conducted by the NIMHD through the Health Disparities Intramural Research Program. The NIMHD is a part of the NIH that promotes minority health, conducts and supports research, training, research infrastructure, fosters emerging programs, disseminates information, and conducts outreach to minority and other health disparity communities.
Originally from Birmingham, AL, Dr. Coleman received his B.S. from Talladega College, his M.S. in microbial physiology from Atlanta University, and his Ph.D. in microbiology and molecular genetics from Purdue University. He then went on to serve as a lecturer at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN and a biology teacher in Atlanta, GA prior to joining the NIH. Dr. Coleman has enjoyed a long career as a scientist in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Intramural Research Program and has held a number of positions within NIDDK. His most recent research focused on understanding the mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and antibiotic resistance of gram-negative bacteria, notably Helicobacter pylori and Escherichia coli, specifically as they relate to ulcer disease and other bacterial infections. He has authored or co-authored nearly 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and other publications. In 2005, Dr. Coleman received the Dr. Philip J. Browning Scientific Pioneer Award.

Cubist-ICAAC Award and the ICAAC Young Investigator Awards
ASM is now accepting nominations for the Cubist-ICAAC Award and the ICAAC Young Investigator Awards, which will be presented at the 2013 Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC).
The Cubist-ICAAC Award honors outstanding accomplishment in antimicrobial research. Nominees must be actively engaged in research involving development of new agents, investigation of antimicrobial action or resistance to antimicrobial agents, and/or the pharmacology, toxicology or clinical use of those agents. The nominee must not have served on the ICAAC Program Committee within the past two years.
The ICAAC Young Investigator Awardsrecognize and reward early career scientists for research excellence and potential in microbiology and infectious disease. Nominees must be no more than three years beyond completion of postdoctoral research training in microbiology or infectious diseases at the time of the nomination deadline. Up to five awards may be presented each year. One of the awards is earmarked for a researcher working in the area of HIV who resides and works in North America.

Integrated NSF Support Promoting Interdisciplinary Research and Education (INSPIRE, NSF 13-518)
The INSPIRE awards program was established to address some of the most complicated and pressing scientific problems that lie at the intersection of traditional disciplines. It is intended to encourage investigators to submit bold, exceptional proposals that some may consider to be at a disadvantage in a standard NSF review process; it is not intended for proposals that are more appropriate for existing award mechanisms. INSPIRE is open to interdisciplinary proposals on any NSF-supported topic, submitted by invitation only after a preliminary inquiry process initiated by submission of a required Letter of Intent. In fiscal year 2013, INSPIRE provides support through the following three pilot grant mechanisms: INSPIRE Track 1. This is essentially a continuation of the pilot CREATIV mechanism from FY 2012, which was detailed for 2012 in Dear Colleague Letter NSF 12-011. INSPIRE Track 2. These are "mid-scale" research awards at a larger scale than Track 1, allowing for requests of up to $3,000,000 over a duration of up to five years. Expectations for cross-cutting advances and for broader impacts are greater than in Track 1, and the review process includes external review. Director's INSPIRE Awards. Autoimmunity Centers of Excellence, Basic Research Program (U19, RFA-AI-12-060)

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader for the position of director of the Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center (VRC). NIAID supports and conducts basic, applied, and clinical research to better understand, treat, and prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.
VRC’s mission is to conduct research that facilitates the development of effective vaccines for human disease. VRC’s primary focus is an effective vaccine against HIV. In addition, VRC also carries out basic, translational, and clinical research to develop vaccine candidates for biodefense and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. To carry out its mission, VRC evaluates and seeks to optimize immune responses generated by candidate vaccines and advances the most promising candidates into clinical trials. The VRC director reports to the NIAID director and provides overall executive direction and scientific leadership for VRC’s basic, clinical, and translational research activities. He or she also serves as a principal advisor to the NIAID director on vaccines and related biomedical research affairs. Postdoc Fellowships Available at University of Michigan
Departments of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Mathematics and Center for the Study of Complex Systems, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA Applications are invited for two postdoctoral research fellowships in the immunity, epidemiology and evolution of pertussis (whooping cough). Doctoral Research Assistantship at Michigan State University
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University invites applications for a doctoral research assistantship to investigate the dynamics of white‐tailed deer in response to eruptions of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD). Deer populations in Michigan suffered heavy losses in 2012. This study will explore the response of the populations and the implications of spatial arrangement of deer social groups to the management of deer after heavy mortality to EHD. The work will be done in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Qualifications: Applicants must have an MS degree in biology, wildlife, ecology, forestry or related field. Academic requirements include strong GRE scores and GPA.
NSF-Funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Opportunity at Louisiana State University
The LSU Department of Environmental Sciences seeks applications for one Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) position. The undergraduate student will spend 40 hours per week for 8 weeks in the summer of 2013 conducting research in a chemical oceanography laboratory and/or in a microbiology laboratory. The research will include microbiological analyses of environmental samples, molecular analysis of microbes and microbial communities in response to changing environmental parameters such as exposure to Deepwater Horizon oil, analyses of pigments and nutrients in water samples collected from the Louisiana coast, field collection of samples in Port Fourchon, LA and in Grand Isle, LA, analysis of phytoplankton and zooplankton, use of remote sensing for ground-truthing data, and other topics of interest. The student will be expected to maintain a laboratory notebook and participate in weekly lab meetings. At the end of the 8 weeks, the student will present his/her findings in a 30-minute presentation and in the form of a scientific manuscript. The student must be mature, responsible, capable of working independently, and have a decent background in general biology and general chemistry. Additional skills and knowledge are a plus. The student will be conducting research in the laboratories of Dr. Crystal N. The student will receive a stipend of $4,500, contingent upon successful completion of the REU program. A graduate research assistantship ($25,000/year for up to 4 years + in-state travel mileage, tuition waiver & student insurance supplement) is available to a qualified doctoral candidate to join the Sea Grant Oyster Hatchery team addressing the commercialization of triploid oyster production and the development of tetraploid oyster broodstock in Louisiana. After initial application, the candidate must be accepted and enrolled into the LSU Graduate School and the School of Renewable Natural Resources prior to receiving the assistantship, remain in good academic standing, and make satisfactory progress toward a PhD degree, as determined by appropriate LSU faculty. A 3.5 overall and semester GPA must be maintained.
Previous experience in oyster aquaculture is preferred, but not required. The candidate will be responsible for their research program with an emphasis in economic development and assist in the operation and maintenance of oyster hatchery, nursery, and grow-out systems in Grand Isle during hatchery season (April-September). Specific responsibilities include: Assist research team with the development of tetraploid broodstock, commercialization of triploid oyster culture, training oyster farmers, and conducting enterprise budgets on new and existing oyster nursery and grow-out operations; work weekends during hatchery season (typically April-September) as well as weekdays during the summer semester at the hatchery, as necessary; maintain a personal vehicle in good working order to travel from Baton Rouge to Grand Isle & return when necessary (travel fund allotment); help prepare interim and final project reports; and participate in educational activities, meetings, conferences.

In July 2006, the Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities (CMIIM) of the American Society for Microbiology Public and Scientific Affairs Board developed a monthly e-newsletter which contains information pertinent to minority microbiologists. Currently, there are very few minority-based newsletters for scientists, and there are none for microbiologists.
This e-newsletter provides a central means of distributing pertinent information to underrepresented minorities in the field of microbiology. Some examples include career advice, networking tips, relevant news articles, unique funding and career opportunities, microbiological issues affecting minorities (e.g., HIV), minority issues affecting microbiologists (e.g., minority retention), and scientific articles published by minorities or by minority-serving institutions (MSIs).
The target populations are African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Native Americans, Alaska natives, and Pacific Islanders; however, all ASM members are invited to sign up and to share this information with others who may find this e-newsletter beneficial.
