Employment Outlook in the Microbiological Sciences

The report presents the results of a 1995 nationwide survey of current employment and future personnel needs in the microbiological sciences. The ASM sponsored the survey as a part of its mission to provide strategic leadership for the profession and to inform the public about sectors of employment that are vital to the health, safety, technological competitiveness and economic well being of the nation.

In the survey, 1,849 managers of departments across the nation that employ microbiologists, representing four major sectors, education, government, industry and clinical-medical, responded to questions about employment prospects over the next 3 years. The employment study was conducted for the ASM by Westat, Inc., of Rockville, MD, one of the leading survey research firms in the nation.
