The Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15/12 - 10/15/12): Dr. Eugene Cota-Robles (1926 – 2012)
For many centuries, Hispanic Americans have made significant social, political, economic, and scientific contributions to this country's advancement. Therefore, the Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities would like to take this time to honor all contributions made by Hispanics to the field of microbiology in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15/12 - 10/15/12).
In celebration, we honor world-famous microbiologist Dr. Eugene Cota-Robles, who was a long-standing member of the American Society for Microbiology and the American Academy of Microbiology, where he chaired AAM's first Diversity Committee.
Dr. Cota-Robles was born in 1926 in Nogales, AZ, to parents who were natives of northern Mexico. Following completion of High School in Tucson, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. The American People supported him financially in his endeavor to earn a bachelor's degree at the University of Arizona with the aid of the G.I. Bill. After graduation he worked at Gerber Baby Foods in Oakland, CA, as a quality control bacteriologist. He went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis, where his work focused on the internal organization of the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azotobacter agilis . After graduate school, he studied further as a U.S. Public Health Service Postdoctoral Fellow in Stockholm, Sweden, and later became a professor of microbiology at the University of California, Riverside. He continued to work in the area of microbial cell structure at Pennsylvania State University and the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Dr. Cota-Robles was one of the first fully U.S.-educated Mexican Americans to earn a Ph.D. in the natural sciences at a U.S. university, and he may have been the first Mexican American to earn tenure in a scientific discipline at the University of California. Notably, Dr. Cota-Robles was honored by the Eugene H. Cota-Robles Fellowship for predoctoral students. This four-year fellowship program, funded by the University of California Office of the President and the UCLA Graduate Division, supports a limited number of students who are entering Ph.D. programs and are interested in a career in college or university teaching and research.
More recently, Dr. Cota-Robles had been active in trying to increase the inclusion of U.S. minority students as University of California ladder rank faculty, and he was also involved in trying to encourage the availability and need of early childhood education for U.S. Latinos and African Americans. He was Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

MicrobeLibrary: New Resources Wanted
Students and faculty are encouraged to visit and contribute to MicrobeLibrary – a repository of more than 1,600 free resources developed for and by educators. Newly organized as a peer-reviewed, digital media center, the library divides its vast resources into four searchable collections: Visual Media Briefs, the Gallery, Laboratory Protocols, and – coming in 2013 – the Critical Thinking Question Bank. Visual Media Brief editors welcome animations, images, and videos formatted as short research communications for a scientific journal (that is, with introduction, methods, discussion, and reference sections). Gallery editors welcome images, videos, and animations that can enhance lecture or lab presentations. ASM Scientific Writing and Publishing Institute
Senior-level graduate students and early-career postdoctoral scientists are invited to apply for the 2013 ASM Scientific Writing and Publishing Institute. Co-sponsored by ASM and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the institute will be held March 21-24 at ASM’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. Institute participants receive careful guidance and mentoring in topics important for publishing and flourishing in the microbiological sciences: (i) writing and submitting manuscripts, (ii) writing abstracts and titles, (iii) selecting journals for submission and strategically suggesting the best editors and reviewers for a manuscript, (iv) responding to reviewer comments and learning to be a good reviewer, and (v) addressing ethical issues related to scientific research and publishing. The ASM Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education (JMBE) – the premier journal for microbiology and biology education research – welcomes submissions of articles that foster scholarly teaching in the biological sciences. Each issue of JMBE features peer-reviewed, practical tips for teaching, education research and perspectives, innovations in science, and reviews. ASM Undergraduate Research Capstone
Undergraduate students, especially those from minority groups that are underrepresented in the sciences, are invited to apply for the ASM Undergraduate Research Capstone Program. The capstone experience enhances the professional development of students by providing them with opportunities to present their microbiological-sciences-related summer research. Awardees are supported to attend the ASM General Meeting and the ASM Presentation Institute, with the meeting providing a national venue for them to practice the skills they learn at the institute. These skills include preparing effective abstracts and posters, making successful scientific presentations, and interacting professionally with colleagues. Note that capstone awards are contingent upon abstract acceptance to the ASM General Meeting; thus, applicants must also submit abstracts for participation in the meeting. Arctic Research Opportunities, NSF 10-597
The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites investigators at U.S. organizations to submit proposals to conduct research about the Arctic. Arctic research includes field and modeling studies, data analysis, and synthesis about the arctic region. The goal of the NSF Division of Arctic Sciences is to gain a better understanding of the Arctic's physical, biological, geological, chemical, social and cultural processes; the interactions of oceanic, terrestrial, atmospheric, biological, social, cultural, and economic systems; and the connections that define the Arctic. The Division of Arctic Sciences and other NSF programs support projects that contribute to the development of the next generation of researchers and scientific literacy for all ages through education, outreach, and broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections (ADBC, NSF 12-565)
This program seeks to enhance and expand the national resource of digital data documenting existing vouchered biological and paleontological collections and to advance scientific knowledge by improving access to digitized information (including images) residing in vouchered scientific collections across the United States. The information associated with various collections of organisms, such as geographic, paleogeographic and stratigraphic distribution, environmental habitat data, phenology, information about associated organisms, collector field notes, and tissues and molecular data extracted from the specimens, is a rich resource providing the baseline from which to further biodiversity research and provide critical information about existing gaps in our knowledge of life on earth. The national resource is structured at three levels: a central coordinating organization, a series of thematic networks based on an important research theme, and the physical collections. The national resource builds upon a sizable existing national investment in curation of the physical objects in scientific collections and contributes vitally to scientific research and technology interests in the United States. It will become an invaluable tool in understanding contemporary biological issues and challenges. Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP, NSF 12-554)
AGEP is committed to the national goal of increasing the numbers of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders (URMs), including URMs with disabilities entering and completing graduate education and postdoctoral training to levels representative of the available pool of URMs. Increased URM participation in advanced STEM education and training is critical for supporting the development of a diverse professional STEM workforce especially a diverse STEM faculty who serve as the intellectual, professional, personal, and organizational role models that shape the expectations of future scientists and engineers. Immunity in the Elderly (R01, RFA-AI-12-038)
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the National Institute of Aging (NIA) invite applications to define the mechanisms for induction, development, and maintenance of protective immunity in the elderly in response to infections with or vaccinations against NIAID Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (http://www.niaid.nih.gov/topics/emerging/Pages/list.aspx). The goal of this FOA is to develop a better understanding of the immune mechanisms involved during the aging process that contribute to impaired immune responses resulting in severe infections and dampened responses to vaccines in this population. This FOA requires human studies, to gain insights into immune changes in elderly individuals. Thus, at least one aim of the project must focus fully on human studies; appropriately justified animal work may be included in additional aims to conduct mechanistic studies that are not possible in humans. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – History of Microbiology Research Travel Awards Deadline – NOVEMBER 15, 2012
The Center for the History of Microbiology/ASM Archives (CHOMA) Committee is pleased to announce two Travel Awards of $1500 each for research at the ASM Archives in the area of the history of microbiology. The grants support research of the awardees’ choosing, and awardees may be invited to present their research at the ASM Annual Meeting and/or prepare an article for Microbe, the ASM membership magazine.
The CHOMA collections, located at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), include 9,000 volumes on microbiology and related topics; photographs of scientists and microbes; topical files on various aspects of microbiology; biographical materials; instructional materials, including slides and motion pictures; records of the Society from its founding in 1899 to the present, including journals and proceedings of meetings; and several collections of personal papers. In addition, a short description of previous historical research undertaken by the applicant (if applicable) and/or an indication of how/why the applicant became interested in the history of microbiology must be provided. The recently published CMIIM List of Minority Microbiologists (CLMM) is now expanding to include new additions. All new additions will be considered by the CMIIM for inclusion to the CLMM. To submit requests to be added to the CLMM, please submit a biosketch of at least one paragraph, along with a .jpg image of yourself, to CMIIM@asmusa.org. The committee reserves the right to make slight modifications to each biosketch, but the final version will be submitted to you for final approval before publishing. NIAID Transition Program in Clinical Research
The NIAID Transition Program in Clinical Research (TPCR) provides an exceptional opportunity for physicians to gain clinical and translational research experience in the NIAID Division of Intramural Research (DIR). The program aims to increase the pool of well-trained clinical investigators who are competitive for clinical tenure-track positions.
Up to three candidates per year will be selected for three- to five-year appointments as assistant clinical investigators. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D. /Ph.D., be board eligible or board certified in a subspecialty (or equivalent), and qualify for credentialing by the NIH Clinical Center. Applicants should identify a DIR lab chief who will agree to host their research. The Hynson lab at the University of Hawaii Manoa, Department of Botany is currently recruiting highly motivated, enthusiastic, and well qualified graduate students. We study fungal ecology with an emphasis on plant‐fungal interactions such as the mycorrhizal symbiosis. The goal of our research is to deepen current understandings of the importance of plant‐fungal interactions in natural environments. We accomplish this through field and laboratory experiments that utilize cutting‐edge techniques in molecular ecology and ecophysiology. Postdoctoral Position in the Ecology and Epidemiology of Rodent‐Borne Zoonotic Diseases at University of Aberdeen, UK / Institut Pasteur Madagascar
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join a Wellcome Trust funded project that is examining the environmental and socio‐economic risk drivers for rodent‐borne zoonoses in Madagascar. The researcher will investigate how environmental factors such as climate, habitat and landscape influence infection prevalence in small mammal communities. In addition, you will use molecular tools to understand inter‐specific and spatial transmission patterns. The pathogens to be studied include plague, hantavirus, Leptospira and Rickettsia. The successful applicant will have expertise in both field work and laboratory assays, and experience of statistical analysis of ecological, epidemiological and/or molecular data (with R or other software).You will be expected to spend significant amounts of time in Madagascar, helping to co‐ordinate field and laboratory work. The ability to communicate in French is strongly desirable. Tenure‐Track Position in Animal Parasitology at Northeastern Illinois University
The Department of Biology at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) invites applications for a tenure‐track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level to begin September 2013. We seek a candidate who is using innovative and interdisciplinary approaches that address either basic or applied biological problems through the study of animal parasitic models. Ph.D. Assistantship available in Microbial Ecology at Virginia Tech
Microbes mediate many important processes at the ecosystem and global scales, yet approximately 99% of all microbes are not culturable, meaning we know little or nothing about their distribution or role in the environment. Now, however new molecular tools allow us to begin to answer very basic questions in microbial ecology. What microbes are present in a particular habitat? What kind of important or beneficial ecological functions might they provide? By combining new molecular methods with traditional culture based techniques we can seek to gain new insights into these important questions in a variety of habitats. Assistantship support is available for one or two incoming doctoral students focusing on microbial ecology in the Crop & Soil Environmental Sciences Department at Virginia Tech. Support is available to start in either spring or fall semesters of 2013. The Department offers ample resources for student research in environmental microbiology, including extensive laboratory and field equipment, opportunities to collaborate with a wide variety of colleagues within and beyond Virginia Tech, and access to a wide variety of natural and managed ecosystems for study. Students would work under the advisement of Dr. Brian Badgley, with the opportunity to conduct independent research on variety of topics in microbial ecology. Work in the laboratory focuses on the structure and function of microbial populations and communities in environmental matrices such as surface waters, sediment, and soil. Students will use a combination of field work and laboratory techniques such as culturing, genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, or genetic fingerprinting. Graduate Study Opportunity in Microbial Ecology, Baylor University

Research in the lab focuses on the diversity and dynamics of microbial communities along with environmental gradients such as biogeochemical parameters and spatial distribution. The Amend lab, in the Botany department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, is recruiting enthusiastic and experienced graduate students for fall 2013. Field Assistants in Plant Disease Ecology (5-6 positions)

JOB DESCRIPTION: We seek assistants to work full time on two NSF‐funded projects that use a group of aphidtransmitted viruses and the wild grass species they infect to investigate the dynamics of generalist, vector‐borne pathogens. Employment will extend from early February through June 2013 at the University of California’s Hopland Research and Extension Center: http://ucanr.org/sites/hopland/ Work is primarily in the field with occasional duties in the greenhouse and lab. Responsibilities include collecting plant samples for biological and chemical lab assays, surveying aphid populations and enemy damage on plants, estimating plant species abundances via percent cover, weeding experimental plots, propagating plants in the greenhouse, and measuring plant physiological traits. Flexible work hours and some weekends required. Start and end dates are moderately flexible. Dorm housing and on‐site transportation is provided, but assistants are responsible for their own transportation to the site. This is a great opportunity to participate in and learn about basic ecological and epidemiological research. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Outdoor research experience, especially field work with plants, insects, or microbes. Willingness and ability to work outdoors under a wide range of weather conditions (daytime temperatures range from 45‐95 ̊F, and rain is common), and to perform mildly strenuous field work for extended periods (up to 9 hours).
Especially essential is a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and to interact respectfully in a communal living setting. Preferred: BA or BS degree, with coursework in ecology/botany. Valid driver’s license. Experience measuring photosynthesis/using IRGAs; experience measuring soil nutrients. Familiarity with California flora.

In July 2006, the Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities (CMIIM) of the American Society for Microbiology Public and Scientific Affairs Board developed a monthly e-newsletter which contains information pertinent to minority microbiologists. Currently, there are very few minority-based newsletters for scientists, and there are none for microbiologists.
This e-newsletter provides a central means of distributing pertinent information to underrepresented minorities in the field of microbiology. Some examples include career advice, networking tips, relevant news articles, unique funding and career opportunities, microbiological issues affecting minorities (e.g., HIV), minority issues affecting microbiologists (e.g., minority retention), and scientific articles published by minorities or by minority-serving institutions (MSIs).
The target populations are African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Native Americans, Alaska natives, and Pacific Islanders; however, all ASM members are invited to sign up and to share this information with others who may find this e-newsletter beneficial.
