ASM’s Speakers Bureau is designed to raise awareness among ASM Student Chapter members, undergraduate and graduate, about the myriad of career opportunities that a degree in microbiology offers. Its goal is to attract students to the profession.
The Speakers Bureau features microbiologists who work in the clinical lab and industry, specifically, biosafety, dairy, food, medical device, and pharmaceuticals. ASM has recruited speakers who are willing to talk about their dynamic career in microbiology at ASM Student Chapter meetings. They will discuss -
- Day-to-day responsibilities
- Highlights of the job
- Career path
- Suggestions for how to get a job in microbiology upon graduation
- ASM’s career resources, including certification
Each speaker has created an online profile that provides information about their job and employer. The profiles can be searched by zip code, state, and scientific area. Students are encouraged to view the online profiles of speakers in their area and select who they would like to invite to their chapter meeting. Once a speaker has been identified, students complete an online speaker request form. The form is submitted to ASM; ASM will contact the speaker about his/her availability. After the presentation has been scheduled, the Student Chapter will work directly with the speaker to finalize the event’s specifics.
ASM will monitor the effectiveness of the bureau by sending a survey to the Student Chapters after the presentation.

Active MRSA Surveillance Program
The IP Col-lab-oration Project presents a two-part live webinar series focusing on effective MRSA Surveillance Programs.
Part one will be led by Lance Peterson, MD, CIC, who will provide guidelines and expectations of active MRSA surveillance. It will reinforce the importance of collaboration between the hospital clinical microbiology laboratory and the hospital infection prevention department in accessing your facility needs for MRSA surveillance testing, and developing and implementing an effective MRSA surveillance program. This information is imperative for individuals involved in implementing, assessing, or maximizing the use of active MRSA surveillance testing as part of a complete HAI prevention program.
It will be presented on March 6 at 3:00 pm (eastern).
Part two will be led by Lillian Burns, MT, MPH, CIC. She will provide insight on the economic and clinical significance of implementing a MRSA surveillance program and what administrators need to understand. Additionally, she'll discuss how the lab and infection control can work together to implement solutions.
It will be presented on March 8 at 3:00 pm (eastern).
Both webinars are free for ASM members. To listen to the discussion, visit http://webinars.apic.org/upcoming.php, select the webinar, scroll to the bottom and click the button "Live Online Webinar" and add to cart.
