Job Title: Clinical Director, Infectious Diseases Division
Years in position: 1 year
Day to day responsibilities:
The Clinical Director is responsible for providing expertise in diagnostic clinical microbiology, using molecular and conventional diagnostic methods for patient care in both a tertiary/quaternary health care system and an outpatient setting. Specifically, this position provides medical and technical direction to the laboratory, implements new diagnostic tests, and interacts with clinicians in medical centers and outpatients environments.

What do you love about your job?
One of the most satisfying aspects to this job is the daily interaction with clinicians where I am able to take laboratory data and together with the physician use the patient’s history and symptoms help in the diagnosis of his or her illness. I also enjoy the challenge of implementing new technology and assays for the clinical microbiology laboratory and finally I take great satisfaction in teaching microbiology to new medical technologists and medical students.

Degrees, experience, license(s), and skills required for position:
Doctorate in Microbiology with at least three years experience as a Director of a Clinical Microbiology Laboratory or two years in an ASM certified Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Medical and Public Health Microbiology. Board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Medical Microbiology.

Tips/Advice for how to secure a job in microbiology upon graduation:
I think the best advice I could give to someone interested in clinical microbiology would be to contact your local medical center about receiving a tour or participating in plate rounds at the clinical microbiology laboratory. If after this interaction you are still interested in this field I would ask to sit down with the laboratory director and learn about the many different career avenues that exist regarding microbiology in the health care setting (i.e., a medical technologist, laboratory director or an infectious disease physician).
