|Day to day responsibilities:
I provide medical direction for the clinical microbiology laboratory. I have teaching responsibilities for residents (pediatric and pathology) as well as infectious disease fellows.
What do you love about your job?
Physician interaction and technology implementation. I enjoy clinical research projects that lead to meaningful improvements in patient care.
Degrees, experience, license(s), and skills required for position:
My job requires a doctorate (PhD, MD or equivalent). As a PhD I went through a 2 year fellowship in medical microbiology and sat for the American board of medical microbiology exam (and passed). This was not a requirement for the state of Texas but is required in other states.
Tips/Advice for how to secure a job in microbiology upon graduation:
Be aggressive in pursuing fellowship. The barrier to entry in the field starts with admission to a fellowship program. These programs are highly competitive and few in number. Be active in talking to clinical microbiologists to learn about the field and find ways to get involved with them so that you can gain experience in understanding the field.
