|Day to day responsibilities:
I am medical director for diagnostic microbiology operations in a five hospital healthcare system in central Pennsylvania. I perform translational research to develop new laboratory testing methods. I am Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Wilkes University
What do you love about your job?
I love helping diagnose infectious disease and improving laboratory operations. I love knowing that each day will bring a different challenge. I love analyzing data to identify disease and operational trends and I love writing and public speaking.
Degrees, experience, license(s), and skills required for position:
I earned a Ph.D. in Pathobiology with a minor in Microbiology/Immunology and followed that with a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical Microbiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I also have a master’s degree in health administration, which proves extremely useful to me on a daily basis. I have a B.S. in Microbiology and Medical Technology with board certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the American Society of Microbiology, and the American Board of Medical Microbiology.
Tips/Advice for how to secure a job in microbiology upon graduation:
Seeks hands on experience and don’t be afraid to try something new at every opportunity. Once you have a job you can specialize, but to get started you need to develop a spectrum of skills. Don’t forget to work on non- science skills like writing and speaking.
