More than 1.2 million people are infected with HIV in both urban and rural areas in Ethiopia. Since 2011, ASM has been working in partnership with the CDC-Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI) to build human and laboratory capacity to improve clinical microbiology services across the Ethiopian laboratory network through customized training and mentoring programs. From 2-5 December 2013, an ASM delegation will travel to Ethiopia to meet with officials from CDC-Ethiopia and EHNRI to present the data collected and analyzed from ASM’s training and mentoring support since 2011, and discuss other ways to coordinate efforts more effectively to ensure successful knowledge transfer and sustainability. In addition, the ASM delegation will visit two ASM Bio-Resource Centers (BRC) established at the mentored Adama and Bahir-Dar regional laboratories. The purpose of the visits will be to conduct focus group discussions to assess needs and resources. The ASM BRC program aims to provide the local scientific community with access to relevant, time-sensitive scientific information that will assist with rendering sustainable efforts to strengthen the health systems workforce in Ethiopia.
