In an effort to increase the participation of underrepresented minority (URM) groups in microbiology related fields, ASM will offer American General Meeting Minority Travel Grants to help defray expenses associated with travel to asm2013. Postdoctoral scholars, faculty from URM groups, and faculty from Minority Serving Institutions and Community Colleges who have demonstrated their interest in mentoring URM trainees in the microbiological sciences will be eligible to receive up to $2,000. MicrobeLibrary – New Lab Protocols and Visual Media Briefs
Seven new resources are available in the ASM MicrobeLibrary, an online, searchable, and peer-reviewed digital media center for undergraduate microbiology. Three additions are in the library’s Laboratory Protocol Collection, and four are in its Visual Media Briefs Collection. The Laboratory Protocol Collection provides educators with information briefs about standard microbiological laboratory tests. Each brief includes procedural steps as well as the purpose, theory, history, and safety considerations for the protocol, along with tips, comments, and references. The collection offers briefs for 41 commonly used protocols; its newest briefs are for gelatin hydrolysis test, carbohydrate fermentation, and starch agar protocols. The Visual Media Briefs Collection consists of high-quality, short communications with digital images, animations, and videos about the microbial world. The collection’s newest resources are “Roles of Natural Killer Cells in Body Defense,” “Diagnostic Methods for the Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli Infection,” “Ascaris lumbricoides Development,” and “Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis the Chytrid Fungus Frog Pathogen.” Learn more at http://www.microbelibrary.org.
Career Development Grants for Postdoctoral Women
The ASM Career Development Grants for Postdoctoral Women Committee is currently accepting applications for its 2013 grant program. Three grants ($1200 each) are given annually to advance the careers of postdoctoral women with outstanding scientific accomplishments and potential for significant research in the area of microbiology. The fields covered by the award are any of those represented by the scientific divisions of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The grants support the career development of the winning candidates by providing funds to attend a meeting (other than the ASM General Meeting or ICAAC), to visit another laboratory, to take a course in a geographically distant place, or for other travel to advance the candidate's career.
To be eligible for this program, a woman scientist must hold a doctoral degree and have no more than five years of relevant research experience since receipt of her most recent doctoral degree. Candidates must currently be performing postdoctoral work in microbiology, at an institution in the United States. The candidate must be a member of ASM. A letter of support must be provided by a nominator, who should be the candidate’s research project director, Department Chair, or Center Director. The nominator must be a member of ASM and may only support one candidate for this award per year.

Algorithms for Threat Detection (ATD, NSF 12-502)
The Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) has formed a partnership with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) to develop the next generation of mathematical and statistical algorithms for the detection of chemical agents, biological threats, and threats inferred from geospatial information.
This program solicits proposals from the mathematical sciences community in two main thrust areas: mathematical and statistical techniques for genomics, and mathematical and statistical techniques for the analysis of data from sensor systems. Long Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB, NSF 12-501)
Through the LTREB program, the Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) and the Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) encourage the submission of proposals that generate extended time series of biological and environmental data to address ecological and evolutionary processes and resolve important issues in organismal and environmental biology. Researchers must have collected at least six years of previous data to qualify for funding, and these data must motivate the proposed research. The proposal also must present a cohesive conceptual rationale or framework for ten years of research. Questions or hypotheses outlined in this conceptual framework must guide an initial 5-year proposal as well as a subsequent, abbreviated renewal. Together, these will constitute a decadal research plan appropriate to begin to address critical and novel long-term questions in organismal and environmental biology. As part of the requirements for funding, projects must show how collected data will be shared broadly with the scientific community and the interested public. SBE Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants (SBE DDRIG, NSF 11-547)
The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), and the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question. Established in 2004, Brown University’s Environmental Change Initiative (ECI) catalyzes collaborative research among 15 affiliated academic units and over 50 individual researchers. Particular strengths include coastal and marine ecology, biogeochemistry, earth systems history, population studies, environmental sociology, remote sensing and spatial analysis, evolutionary genetics, ecosystem‐based management, biogeography, and climate change adaptation. Emerging areas of emphasis include sustainable energy and the intersection of climate change with health and well‐being. Job Posting: Wildlife Disease Ecologist
Lincoln Park Zoo is offering a scientific research position in Wildlife Disease Ecology as part of the Davee Center for Epidemiology and Endocrinology and the Urban Wildlife Institute. The primary focus is on applied research that investigates disease ecology and the impact of disease on wildlife conservation. Tasks include participating in all aspects of the scientific method including designing studies, preparing protocols, collecting data and samples, analyzing data, writing grants, writing manuscripts for publication and preparing oral or poster presentations for staff and scientific conferences. This position will support our current national and international wildlife disease research projects and design and implement new wildlife disease research projects at the local, national and international level. Research also will complement our zoological surveillance program and collaborate with the Davee Center Endocrinologist and Epidemiologist, the Urban Wildlife Institute, and other centers within the Conservation and Science Department at Lincoln Park Zoo. This position is for 2 years, subject to extension after review, and will be filled as soon as possible. Salary will be commensurate with experience. PhD in ecology, epidemiology, statistics or a related discipline is required. A medical degree (MD/DVM) plus MS (MPh) and/or field research experience may be considered. Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Microbiology
The University of Iowa Department of Microbiology invites qualified undergraduate students in microbiology and other biological sciences to apply to our Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Microbiology. We anticipate offering fellowships to 8-10 applicants who wish to participate in ten weeks of microbiology research and are interested in pursuing graduate school and a career in biological research. Participants will conduct research on a project they select under the supervision of a faculty member. The program will begin on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, and end on Friday, August 2, 2013. Students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States and who will have, by June 2013, completed their sophomore or junior year toward a bachelor's degree in a biological science are eligible to apply. This program seeks to improve diversity in the biological sciences. Disabled students, underrepresented minority students, and disadvantaged students (economically or first in family to attend college) are especially encouraged to apply. Each student will receive a $5,000 stipend plus a food allowance. The program also pays for housing in the Mayflower dormitory. SPOTLIGHT ON MINORITY MICROBIOLOGISTS
Crystal N. Johnson, Ph.D., Assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA
Vibrios are Gram-negative bacteria that occur naturally in marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments. The three main human pathogens are Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio vulnificus. Within environmental populations, only a small minority of these possess virulence factors associated with human illness. It is well-known that these organisms are intimately related to temperature and other environmental factors, but the exact combinations of these other factors and how much they influence vibrio abundance remain uncertain. These environmental factors were examined in a recent work by Dr. Crystal N. Johnson and colleagues at Louisiana State University, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, The University of Southern Mississippi, the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center, The University of Maryland, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health [Johnson, et al., Appl Environ Microbiol, 2012, 78(20):7249–7257]. Predictably, sea surface temperature was a strong predictor of vibrio abundance in the sampling locations and niches; however, salinity, suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll levels, and dissolved organic carbon were also significantly correlated in various combinations.
Crystal N. Johnson, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Louisiana State University. She earned her Ph.D. in microbiology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2004 and did postdoctoral work at both UAB and The University of Southern Mississippi. She has published in The Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, and Microbial Ecology, and her research interests have focused on molecular epidemiology, bacterial pathogenesis, marine microbiology, and type III secretion systems. She has served on NSF's Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP), Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases (EEID), and Centers for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) review panels. She serves as a reviewer for Microbial Ecology and has served as Associate Editor for Current Microbiology. Dr. Johnson has also won several awards, including the American Society for Microbiology's President's Award for Best Graduate Student Talk, the Minority Access National Role Model Award, and an ASM student travel grant. She has been featured on Microbe World, "Life on a Half Shell," where she discussed her research on Vibrio parahaemolyticus. She serves on the ASM Communications Committee and the ASM Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities (CMIIM), and she is also the Associate Editor of CMIIM's The Minority Microbiology Mentor.
In July 2006, the Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities (CMIIM) of the American Society for Microbiology Public and Scientific Affairs Board developed a monthly e-newsletter which contains information pertinent to minority microbiologists. Currently, there are very few minority-based newsletters for scientists, and there are none for microbiologists.
This e-newsletter provides a central means of distributing pertinent information to underrepresented minorities in the field of microbiology. Some examples include career advice, networking tips, relevant news articles, unique funding and career opportunities, microbiological issues affecting minorities (e.g., HIV), minority issues affecting microbiologists (e.g., minority retention), and scientific articles published by minorities or by minority-serving institutions (MSIs).
The target populations are African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Native Americans, Alaska natives, and Pacific Islanders; however, all ASM members are invited to sign up and to share this information with others who may find this e-newsletter beneficial.

The Committee on Microbiological Issues Impacting Minorities is chaired by Dwayne W. Boucaud, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Quinnipiac University Department of Biomedical Sciences in Hamden, CT. The Minority Microbiology Mentor Editor-in-Chief is Dr. Floyd L. Wormley Jr., Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Associate Editor is Crystal N. Johnson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA.
