George C. Hill, Ph.D. is the Levi Watkins, Jr. Professor and Associate Dean for Diversity in Medical Education at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Hill received his B.S. from Rutgers University in Camden, NJ, his M.S. from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and finally his Ph.D. from New York University, New York City, NY where he worked on the electron transport systems in African trypanosomes, the causative agent of African sleeping sickness.
Hill was an NIH Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, Great Britain prior to joining the faculty at Colorado State University where he continued his research on African trypanosomiasis. He was a Fulbright Fellow to the University of Nairobi, Nairobi Kenya prior and then joined the faculty at Meharry Medical College where he served in several administrative positions including Director of the Division of Biomedical Sciences, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, and Vice President for Sponsored Research while still maintaining an active research program. He was elected a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1998 and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2002. Hill maintains an active research program studying the molecular and biochemical basis of differentiation and characterization of the trypanosome alternative oxidase in African trypanosomes at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.
