Since September 2008, ASM has worked closely with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s International Laboratory Branch/Division of Global HIV/AIDS and the African Centre for Integrated Laboratory Training (ACILT) to effectively deliver courses to help strengthen laboratory diagnosis skills to front-line laboratory staff from resource-limited countries.

Success Stories

ASM’s Continuous Support to ACILT

In response to Africa’s need for a well trained and competent laboratory workforce, CDC and the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) helped established the African Centre for Integrated Laboratory Training (ACILT) in 2008.  ACILT develops and presents hands-on training courses for front-line laboratory staff in order to expand laboratory capacity in Africa for the diagnosis and monitoring of major infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), and malaria.  Since 2010, ASM has been supporting ACILT by providing qualified and experienced expert instructors to help develop and facilitate hands-on courses on “TB Culture and Identification” and “TB Drug Susceptibility Testing” for front-line laboratory staff.  Participants are encouraged to share the learned lab practices and principles with other personnel working in their laboratories. ASM’s support to ACILT will continue through 2014
