Since 2012, ASM has developed and implemented tools to support human capacity building for HIV laboratories and integrated a quality management systems approach into laboratory practices. ASM works with the Ukraine – CDC (UCDC), the National Reference HIV Infection Immunology Lab (NRL), and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraine to strengthen HIV rapid testing and Pima CD4 testing throughout the country. ASM also supports the P.L. Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (NMAPE) to disseminate HIV-related information though courses and a BioAccess Centre.

HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention in Ukraine

In November 2014, ASM consultants traveled to Kyiv Ukraine as part of the continuing work with the Ukrainian CDC and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Ukraine (Alliance) to implement the Alere Pima CD4 Analyser for use in conjunction with HIV testing services across 30+ sites in Ukraine. The objective was to develop a validation plan for the implementation of Pima.

A large stakeholder meeting framed the discussion around an introduction to the Pima Analyser, its accuracy and the published literature on implementation and public health impact and cost-effectiveness. A series of field visits arranged by US CDC-Ukraine included visits to Ukraine – CDC (UCDC) National Reference HIV Infection Immunology Lab (NRL), Kyiv regional TB Dispensary in Boyarka, the Kyiv City AIDS Hospital laboratory, and the Kyiv Regional AIDS Center to see how voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) units perform. Stakeholders finalized the validation implementation document on the last day of the visit.

BioResource Center (BRC)

The purpose of the BioResource Center (BRC) is to provide scientists, educators, laboratorians, policy makers, and students with cutting-edge scientific resources, training, and increase their knowledge-base of biological sciences. The BRC in Ukraine serves as a location for scientists and stakeholders to convene; offers access to cutting-edge scientific resources; and provides ongoing professional development training through scientific webinars, virtual workshops, and also on-site workshops and lectures.
