ASM's structured course on medical Mycology in Vietnam has proved to be an effective approach for promoting sustainable local capacity development. ASM designed and delivered a structured course on medical mycology, consisting of two parts: Basic Mycology and Advanced Mycology. A selected group of laboratory technicians from microbiology laboratories in Vietnam were educated by ASM experts in 2012. The training program included both lectures and practical laboratory sessions. The lectures incorporated real case studies from Vietnam that ASM experts collected while assisting the local hospitals with fungal outbreaks, such as the outbreak investigation related to tinea capitis in one of the local schools in Vietnam. The first part of the program was very successful and ASM was requested to repeat it for another group of trainees from Bach Mai hospital in Hanoi, which is one of the major teaching hospitals in the country.
