Travel Awards for the General Meeting

Two types of student travel grants are available each year. The Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant is a $500 grant given to approximately 160 students who will be presenting an abstract at the General Meeting. The Richard and Mary Finkelstein Travel Grant also is a $500 grant given to 6 students presenting at the General Meeting whose research is in the area of microbial pathogenesis.

Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grants

Purpose - to provide support for students attending the General Meeting

Award - Each Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant Award is $500 for use in attending the General Meeting to present a poster.
Eligibility - to qualify for consideration the student must:
  • Be an ASM Member and the presenting author
  • Be accepted to present a poster at the General Meeting
  • Be an undergraduate/pre-doctoral student, or a Ph.D. or M.D. whose degree has been or will be awarded after May of the current year and before May of the meeting year
  • Have indicated a desire to be considered for the grant on the abstract submission, and
  • Be accepted to present a poster at the General Meeting.

The applicant must submit a letter of nomination from a faculty member or department head on official letterhead. The letter must state that the student is expected to be active in the training or degree program at the time of the meeting. If the student will complete their terminal degree between the date of submission and the meeting, the letter must indicate the expected date of completion. The abstract tracking number must be included in the body of the letter. The letter should be submitted to ASM not later than one week after the closeout of abstract submissions of each year.  Exact date will be published in the Call for Abstracts for the General Meeting.

Selection Criteria: 
  • The scientific quality of the submitted abstract
  • The student has not received an similar travel grant award in the last two years
  • Only one travel grant per laboratory
  • The student must be a member of ASM, and
  • A current letter of nomination for the General Meeting must be on file.

Selection Process - Selection is made by the General Meeting Program Committee. The awards are highly competitive and only about 25-30% of those seeking grants will receive them. If a grant recipient cannot present the accepted poster, the recipient MUST notify ASM as soon as possible. The grant will be recinded and awarded to an alternate.


The Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Grants
Purpose - to provide support for students attending the General Meeting

Award - Each Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Grant Award is $500 for use in attending the General Meeting to present a poster.
Eligibility - to qualify for consideration the student must:
  • meet all the requirements for a Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant (including a letter of nomination), and
  • Be presenting research in the area of microbial pathogenesis
Selection Criteria - Students are selected based on:
  • The scientific quality of the submitted abstract
  • The student has not received an similar travel grant award in the last two years
  • Only one travel grant per laboratory
  • The student must be a member of ASM
  • Only one Travel Grant per laboratory; and
  • A letter on nomination must be on file.
Selection Process - Only students who meet the criteria for the Corporate Activities Program Student Travel Grant will be considered for this award. The General Meeting Program Committee will review the abstracts of the CAP Student Travel Grant recipients to select those best meeting the requirements of the Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Grant. A maximum of six grants will be awarded to students annually.
